Search Engine Optimization (sometimes known as SEO) is the process of improving your web site's "relationship" with the various search engines out there on the Internet. Now "relationship" can be defined in a lot of different ways. For the most part, you want to rank higher for keywords or phrases in the search engines and Search Engine Optimization is the process of doing that.

Watch Out for SEO Fraudsters

There are a few people who deem themselves to be SEO experts, and they often ask you to pay ridiculous amounts of money for them to get you to "the top of Google". There are some legidiment SEO experts out there, but many of them are con-men. Here is what Google says about it:

Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.

How to Submit Yourself to Search Engines

There are three major search engines you need to pay most attention to, and get yourself submitted to. They are Google, Bing and Yahoo!. I would toss Ask in there too, but they do not have a way for you to submit your web site to them for review.

It's a good idea to submit your site to as many search engines as possible in order to let the search engines know you exist. Don't get caught up with flashy ads from SEO companies claiming to submit you to hundreds of search engines MONTHLY or PERIODICALLY. Once you have made a submission then you are submitted and there is NO need for you to keep submitting yourself.
