Here are some frequently asked questions about our Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting at Lunarpages.

What is VPS?

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. VPS behaves like a dedicated server except that a few VPS accounts share the physical server.

What VPS Plans Does Lunarpages Offer?

We currently have two Virtual Private Server plans:

Linux-based Virtual Private Server

Windows-based Virtual Private Server

What is the main difference between dedicated hosting and VPS? Why would I upgrade to VPS plan from a shared account?

The only difference between VPS and dedicated server is that in VPS you share the physical server hardware with other VPS accounts, while you are the only user on the dedicated server who can utilize entire server. Consequently, VPS has a reduced cost, however, with reduced performance.

There are many restrictions on shared servers that are necessary to provide reliable services to all users on the server. VPS users control a lot of the settings on the server thus getting customized environment for website and server needs. \

What happens if you go over by bandwidth limit?

We will charge you $0.75 per each Gigabyte over the bandwidth limit for your plan, we don't suspend your account and do not send out a warning to you. If you feel that you don't want to go over the limit, you can limit your accounts so that they cease to operate if you reach the bandwidth limit for your VPS.

Can I get a trial period to test out your VPS for free?

Unfortunately, this is something we can't offer due to potential security risks.

Which applications can be run within VPS?

Most applications can work within VPS without any modifications. Programs do not have to support Virtuozzo.

Can I resell web space on my VPS?

Yes, VPS is yours and you can certainly resell space within the VPS.

Which type of content am I allowed to place on my VPS?

We can host just about everything, as long as it is legal in the state of California. If you have any questions about that, you can check out Lunarpages legal documents here:

What are the hardware specs of the VPS servers?

Our VPS all run on dual Xeon 2.0 GHz processors with 8 Gigs of RAM and SCSI RAID 5 disk subsystem. Each VPS limited by 512 Megabytes of RAM and gets guaranteed 1/25th of total processors power. However, if the processors are not busy, the account can use some more CPU resources.

Will I have the administrator access to my VPS?

Yes, you get the root access.

Do you have any managed solutions available for the VPS Plans?

Yes, choose between Lite at $9.99 per month and Intense at $24.99 per month, we offer monitoring of your account through Lunarpages internal monitoring tools.

Can I use your name servers instead of running my private ones?

Our name servers are for shared plans. You need to register and use private name servers for your VPS.

What is Virtuozzo Power Panel (VZPP)?

VZPP is a powerful web-based VPS recovery and management tool. With VZPP you can easily do the following:

  • VPS Start/Stop/Reboot
  • VPS Services Management
  • VPS Resource monitoring
  • VPS Backup/Restore
  • VPS Repair
  • VPS Re-install
  • VPS Actions Log audit

What does "1 GB of FTP Backup Space" mean?

This means that you would have 1 GB of FTP backup space for free with your VPS hosting account. If you require more, you could request it (for a fee) by e-mailing vps@lunarpages.com.

What is the Plesk Power Pack?

Plesk Power Pack is a bundle of the SpamAssassin, Application Pack, Helpdesk, ColdFusion, and PostgreSQL addons for Plesk. It is purchased separately and is an addon to the Plesk license with some number of domains which you purchase to have Plesk installed.
