CPanel File Manager

From Lunarpages Web Hosting Wiki

The cPanel File Manager is a powerful file browsing tool. You may prefer to manage your site using an FTP program. As an alternative though, you can do almost all of the same actions via cPanel's File Manager.

How to Use the cPanel Legacy File Manager

Login to your hosting account's cPanel, and then click on the icon for the File Manager. Once doing so should take you right into the File Manager interface. If you have used any FTP programs in the past, this format may be familiar for you. If not, let me explain how to move around the File Manager.

Your web site files are located in the public_html directory. Click on the folder icon (next to where it says public_html) to access the contents of this directory.

Create a New File

To create a new file, navigate yourself to the location you wish to create the document (for example, get inside of your "public_html" folder). Next, click on the text link that reads Create New File. In the top-right of cPanel, you should see an empty text box. here you can put in the name of the file you wish to create. Next in the drop down menu, select the type of file you want to create. The last step would be to hit the "Create" button.

File Properties

Clicking on the text link name for a file will open up the file properties in the upper-right side of the screen. With each file in your hosting account, you can do the following:

  • Show File Contents
  • Delete File
  • Edit File with Code Editor
  • Edit File
  • Change Permissions
  • Rename File
  • Copy File
  • Move File
  • Download File
  • HTML Editor (when applicable)
  • URL for the file

Uploading a File

To upload a file to a directory, navigate yourself into the directory from the File Manager and then click on the text link that reads "Upload file(s)". Doing so will take you to a new screen that gives you a lot of upload boxes. For each file you wish to upload (you can only do one at a time) click the "Browse..." button and then navigate on your computer where the document is. Once you find it, hit open and it should be added to the list. When you are ready to upload your files hit the "Upload" button at the bottom of the File Manager screen.

Create a New Folder

To create a new folder, click on the text link at the top of the File Manager that says, "Create New Folder". The top right corner of the screen should change, and allow you to type in the new name of your folder. Type the name you want into the text box, and then hit the "Create" button.

Folder Properties

Clicking on the actual name of a directory display properties and options for the specific directory or file. Once you click, you should see in the top right corner of the screen a new list of poperties come up. These can be used to manage this one directory.

  • Delete this folder and all the files under it
  • Rename this folder
  • Change Permissions
  • Move this folder
  • Copy this folder
