Private Domain Registration

From Lunarpages Web Hosting Wiki

Adding private domain name registration protection to your domain name registered with Lunarpages is a good way to keep your personal information secret, and out of the public eye. You may also hear this referenced as anonymous domain registration or privatizing your domain. Anybody out there can search the Whois database to find out more information about the domain name owner. With private domain name registration though, your information will be kept secret.

What is So Special About Private Domain Registration?

To answer this question, let me give you an example of the information that could be provided when somebody does a whois search for your domain name. The first example is without private domain registration enabled and the second is with private domain registration enabled.

Without Private Domain Registration

Billy Nonameican
1234 Elm Street
Las Vegas, NV 87456 US

As you can see here, Billy's real contact information is being revealed to the world!

With Private Domain Name Registration

Customer of Lunarpages
1360 N Hancock Street
Anaheim, CA 92807

Now Billy is safe, nobody will be able to get his personal address or phone number now!

How Do I Add Private Domain Registration?

Private Domain registration is not a part of standard domain registration. It is an additional service that we offer for $7.95 per domain per year. Please note we can only privatize domains that are current registered through us and we can not privatize .us or domain names.

To add this to your domain registration, please send us the following to or via a help desk ticket.

  • Primary Domain Name:
  • Domains You Wish to Make Anonymous (if different):
  • Authorization to charge your Credit Card:
  • The Last 4 Digits of Your Credit Card:

If you do not have a credit card on record then please provide:

  • Primary Domain:
  • Domains You Wish to Make Anonymous (if different):
  • User Name:
  • Postal Address:
  • Phone Number:
  • First/Last Digits of Password:

After this has been added to your domains you have registered here at Lunarpages, please wait 24-48 hours before checking on the status of the privatization. This is due to the fact that the various Whois search engines out there all update their records at different times. Some may update several times a day while others only update once a day.

Why Not Give False Information?

This is a question that comes up a lot when it comes to adding private registration to a domain name. The main reason why you wouldn't want to or could not do that is because that would mean you would need to falsify your account information with us (which is not allowed). The second reason is that ICANN reserves the right to contact any domain name about any registration at any time. If you are unable to be reached, (although this situation is very rare) they could delete your domain name registration.
